Thanks to CNES’s CoRoT space telescope, which recently completed its 2nd year of observations, 5 exoplanets have already been identified and scientists are learning more every day about the inner structure of stars. Next up: the discovery of an Earth-like planet might not be far away.

If you happen to take your holidays in a remote area away from city lights, summer is the ideal time to observe the Milky Way—that fog of stars that stretches across the night sky (and is in fact our own disk-shaped galaxy seen edge-on). This is where COROT, CNES’s exoplanet-hunting satellite, is looking at the moment.

The COROT space telescope has revealed the existence of CoRoT-Exo-4b, a new and rather unusual extrasolar planet. Its orbital motion appears to be synchronous with the period of rotation of its parent star.

COROT recently discovered 2 new gas-giant exoplanets and an unknown celestial object, taking the total of exoplanets it has found to 4. Other signals detected by the satellite could also indicate the existence of another exoplanet with a radius 1.7 times that of Earth’s.

The CoRoT spacecraft is approaching the end of its scheduled mission, but the space telescope’s rich haul of discoveries has left everyone wanting more. In concert with its partners, CNES has therefore decided to extend operations until 31 March 2013.
