    The 53rd International Paris Air Show at Le Bourget opened its doors today. CNES is showcasing France’s space activities in its retro-futuristic public pavilion in front of the Musée de l’Air et de l’Espace, at the foot of the Ariane 5 mock-up.

  3. French SEIS seismometer deployed on Mars

    InSight has successfully set down the SEIS seismometer (Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure) on the surface of the red planet. While this operation only took 45 minutes, teams had been meticulously planning it for more than seven days.

    Monday 26 November at 20:54 CET, InSight (INterior exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) landed on Mars with the French SEIS seismometer (Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure), the mission’s main instrument, in the western portion of Elysium Planitia. Launched on the night of 5 May from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, InSight is now all set to begin its two-year mission to probe the red planet’s deep interior and attempt to answer the question taxing the minds of planetologists everywhere: Mars may have been habitable, but did it ever actually support life?

  7. 30th World Astronaut Congress- 20th anniversary of the Cité de l’espace- Toulouse at the centre of the galaxy!

    The 30th World Astronaut Congress is taking place at the Cité de l’espace in Toulouse this week from Monday 16 to Friday 20 October. CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall, who has followed the flights of all of France’s astronauts for more than 30 years, gave a speech at the opening of the event. Toulouse, Europe’s space capital, was chosen to host this year’s congress as the city concentrating the very best scientific, technological and industrial expertise in space, and as a symbol of European excellence. Jean-Yves Le Gall hailed the success of the Cité de l’espace that is also celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. CNES was closely involved in founding the space theme park that is doing such a great job bringing space culture to a wide audience and the agency’s President stressed its role in stimulating the public’s keen interest in French spaceflight missions.

  8. France-United States space cooperation- Launch of OSIRIS-REx mission

    The OSIRIS-REx mission was launched Friday 9 September at 01:05 from the Cape Canaveral base in Florida, on board an Atlas V launcher. In an absolute first, the mission probe will rendezvous with asteroid Bennu in August 2018 to conduct a detailed study of this small near-Earth object, map its surface and then perform a rapid “Touch-and-Go” in order to take samples such as regolith and return them to Earth in 2023.
