    29 October 2018, China launched the French-Chinese CFOSat satellite from its launch base in the Gobi Desert in Inner Mongolia. This first joint science mission between the two nations to study ocean winds and waves therefore recently celebrated its first year in orbit. Its new observations are now available to the world’s scientific community to gain new insights into the ocean surface.

  2. Launch of French-Chinese CFOSat satellite- CNES and CNRS join forces to study climate change in the world’s oceans

    The French-Chinese CFOSat satellite will be launched on Monday 29 October atop a Chinese Long March 2C vehicle from the Jiuquan launch base in Inner Mongolia. This science mission to study ocean surface winds and waves is the first joint project pursued under French-Chinese space cooperation. Developed by CNES and the China National Space Administration (CNSA), the satellite will carry two radar instruments: SWIM (Surface Waves Investigation and Monitoring), developed by France, which will survey the length, height and direction of waves; and SCAT (wind SCATterometer), developed by China, which will measure the strength and direction of winds. The two instruments will enable measurements of winds and waves to be acquired simultaneously for the first time. CFOSat will thus characterize the dynamics of waves and how they interact with surface winds more comprehensively than ever before.

    Monday 4 July in Beijing, CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall met Xu Dazhe, Administrator of the China National Space Administration (CNSA), to discuss space cooperation between France and China and review progress on the flagship CFOSat and SVOM programmes the two agencies are pursuing together, and to prepare the Climate strand of the 2016 International Astronautical Congress (IAC 2016) taking place from 26-30 September in Guadalajara, Mexico.

  5. France-China space cooperation- 12th meeting of French-Chinese space committee & 9th meeting of space sub-group of French-Chinese strategic dialogue

    Wednesday 5 June, CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall and Zhang Kejian, Administrator of the China National Space Administration (CNSA), chaired the 12th meeting of the French-Chinese space committee in Shanghai devoted to reviewing and developing space cooperation between the two nations. They also took part in the 9th meeting of the space sub-group of the French-Chinese strategic dialogue, which focused on the CFOSat oceanography satellite launched on 29 October 2018 and the development of the SVOM astrophysics mission. At today’s space committee meeting, the findings of thematic workshops on Earth science, climate change, life science, space science and lunar and deep space exploration were presented.

    The 10th French Excellence awards ceremony was held on Thursday 5 December at the Austerlitz Auditorium of the Hôtel National des Invalides, in the presence of its President Maurice Tasler and CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall. CNES, a laureate in 2014 and 2017, celebrated this 10th anniversary with the presentation of its film CNES serving French Excellence.

    Monday 25 February 2019, France’s Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation Frédérique Vidal and China’s Minister for Science and Technology Wang Zhigang hosted the 14th French-Chinese joint science and technology committee in Beijing. Participants included CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall, CNRS* Chairman and CEO Antoine Petit, and INSERM** Chairman and CEO Gilles Bloch. CNRS and INSERM both work directly with CNES on the space component.

    Wednesday 24 April, CNES Chief Operating Officer Lionel Suchet was at the opening ceremony of China Space Day in Changsha, China, alongside Zhang Kejian, Administrator of the China National Space Administration (CNSA), and Xu Dazhe, Governor of Hunan Province. For this national event, CNSA invited France as guest of honour. In his address during the opening plenary, Lionel Suchet underlined that 2019 marks a key milestone for space cooperation between France and China in the four strategic domains of exploration, oceanography, astrophysics and space medicine.

At this day-long session, he also had the opportunity to talk with Wang Zhigang, China’s Minister for Science and Technology, Zhang Kejian, Administrator of the China National Space Administration (CNSA), and Wang Zhenyu, Head of the International Cooperation Bureau of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

    Monday 18 March, CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall gave an address at the University Space Campus (CSU) of the University of Paris-Est Créteil (UPEC), at the Maison des Sciences de l’Environnement, in the presence of UPEC’s Chancellor Jean-Luc Dubois-Randé. The CSU aims to forge ties with local and national socio-economic and institutional partners by working on projects with them, notably CubeSats. On this occasion, CNES’s President underlined the agency’s pivotal role in a great number of spacefaring Europe’s successes and its contribution to projecting France on the world stage, through research and technological innovation.
